CHIASMATA: what is a chiasmata?

-occurs during meiotic division (meiosis), in the course of prophase
two homologous, chromosomes/chromatids are held together at certain points called centromere
-chromatids may break and rejoin at chiasmata
-this allow exchange of gene to occur between homologous chromosomes-a process known as crossing over which promotes genetic variety evolution
