INSULIN: what is an insulin?

-This is a hormone secreted by the beta cells of the islet of Langerhans of pancreas and is concerned with the blood glucose level
-Utilization of glucose as a source of energy  depends on the presence of insulin
-It helps promotes the process of storage of glycogen in the liver
-The normal blood glucose level is around 80-120mg per cent  when  level rises above this range, insulin promotes it use by tissues
-and facilitates its storage as glycogen in the liver and muscles
-Insulin act by increasing the transportation of glucose, fatty acids and amino acids through the cell membranes
-Deficiency leads to diabetes
