MERISTEM: what is/are meristems?

-Meristem can be defined as perpetually young and dividing tissues which are primarily concerned with the formation of new cells
-They add new cells to the plant body and at the same time, perpetuate themselves as meristem
Some of the products of the division do not develop into adult but they remain as meristematic tissues or cells
-The parts of the product of cell division that remain meristematic are called initiating cells
-Those that develop into various young and mature tissue elements are called derivative cells
-Meristems may be apical, lateral, intercalary or marginal. The growth in length of plant is due to the gradual enlargement and elongation of cells of the apical meristems (root apex and stem apex) which are responsible for the primary growth of plants
