VITAMINS: what are vitamins?

-They are non-protein organic compounds
-They are food catalyst. They are present in small quantities in many natural foods
-They are required(essential) for the maintenance of good health and efficient metabolism
-Vitamins are classified into two; water soluble vitamins and fat soluble vitamins
-Vitamins A,D,E,K are fat soluble vitamins while others B and C are water soluble
-If any particular vitamin is lacking from the diet, metabolic activity is impaired
-This produces a disorder symptomatic with that particular vitamin deficiency which is termed deficiency disease
-Eg deficiency disease of vitamin C result in scurvy that of B in beriberi, D in rickets etc.
