Course: it passes anteriorly deep to the neck and
transverses the infratemporal fossa. It passes superficial to the lateral pterygoid
muscle and then disappears into the infratemporal fossa.
Division: the maxillary artery is divided into three parts
viz:
a.
Before the lateral pterygoid muscle (1st
part)
b.
On the lateral pterygoid muscle (2nd
part)
c.
After the lateral pterygoid muscle (3rd
part)
–
Branches of the first part:
1.
Deep auricular artery
2.
Anterior tympanic artery
3.
Middle meningeal artery
4.
Accessory meningeal artery
5.
Inferior alveolar artery.
–
Branches of the second part:
1.
Masseteric branch
2.
Deep temporal branch
3.
Branch to the pterygoid muscle
4.
Branch to the buccal muscle
–
Branches of the third part:
1.
Posterior superior alveolar artery
2.
Middle superior alveolar artery
3.
Infraorbital artery
4.
Descending palatine artery
5.
Artery to the pterygoid canal
6.
