THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THE EXISTENCE OF REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT ARE:
- Franchise must exists. People must
possess the right to vote during elections so that they can choose their
leaders. - Elections must be held
periodically. This will afford the people the ample opportunity of
rejecting any representative who does not perform well. - Existence of Political Parties.
This will enable people to align their interest with any
political party that can serve them better. - There must be accountability on
the part of government to the people. Since the government
is exercising a mandated power, they must give account of stewardship to those who bestow the power on them. - Individual freedom and rights
must also be guaranteed. People must have political, social
and economic right guaranteed and protected. - A fearless and independent
judicial system will also enhance a representative
government. It will not only act as check on those in government but
will help to redress misuse of power and maltreatment
of citizens. - A free press is another condition
for representative government to exist. - Economic development
and growth will
enhance representative government.
