Give an account of the development of any one of the following political parties in Nigeria, The Action Group(AG), The National Council of Nigeria and The Camerouns (NCNC), The Northern People's Congress (NPC)

THE ACTION GROUP
(AG)

The
Action Group (AG) was fomally formed in March 1951 through the conversion of the Egbe Omo Oduduwa – a Yoruba cultural  organisation founded in 1945
in London by some Yoruba students studying there. Late
Chief Obafemi Awolowo
was the founder and leader of AG. Other prominent members of the party were Chief Bode Thomas, S.L. AkintOla, Rewane, Chief
Shonibare, Yoruba traditional rulers including the Late Oni of Ife, Sir Adesoji
Aderemi.

THE NORTHERN
PEOPLE’S CONGRESS (NPC)

The Northern People’s Congress (NPC) was
founded in October 1951. NPC metamorphosed
from the Northern cultural organisation known as
Jam ‘iyyar Mutanen Arewa founded in December 1949. The NPC was
dominated by the Hausa – Fulani and had its roots
on the moslem religion of Islam,
Its leader was Late Sir Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, a powerful spiritual and
traditional leader. The NPC established
absolute political control in the north and had automatic northerners’
allegiance as a result of its strong tradition
of obedience to Islam and support of traditional rulers. The organisational structure of the NPC was
not as clear cut as in other political parties as a result of the fact that the
party revolved around Islam. The aims
of NPC include, to foster the autonomy
of the north, to contribute to the social, political and economic development of
the north, to educate northerners on their
political and civil responsibilities, to foster co-operation and understanding amongst northerners etc.

THE NATIONAL
COUNCIL OF NIGERIA AND THE CAMEROONS(NCNC)

The NCNC was formed in August 1944. It was
first named National Council of Nigeria and
the Cameroons and later re-named the National Convention
of Nigerian Citizens in 1960 when the Cameroons broke away from Nigeria. The NCNC was the first Nigerian political party
to be organised to seek total independence for
Nigeria. Herbert Macaulay was the
first leader and president of NCNC and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe the general secretary. Dr Azikiwe became the
president of the party after the death of Macaulay in 1946.
