Mention the aims of O.A.U. (organisation of Africa unity) and discuss some of its achievements

AIMS OF O.A.U.

1.        
Promotion of unity and solidarity
among member state.
2.        
To ensure good living standard for the peoples through economic cooperation.
3.        
Common defence of territorial
integrity again aggression.
4.        
Eradication of all forms of
colonialism on the of Africa.
5.        
Promotion of international peace
through cooperation with other international
organisations.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF O.A.U
1.    SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTES:
The O.A.U. has been able to mediate in some
dis between member states. For
example, the organize: a useful role in peace
negotiations between 1967 and 1969 when there was Political Crisis in Nigeria.
2. FINANCIAL AND DIPLOMATIC SUPPORT FOR NATIONALIST MOVEMENTS:
The liberation committee of the O.A.U has
supported nationalist movements in countries fighting for independence For instance, it supported Guinea, Bissau, Mozambique,
Namibia and Angola. These countries are now independent.
3.    EDUCATIONAL, CULTURAL AND SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION:
There have been some achievements in the areas
education, scientific, cultural
and social cooperation member states.
4.    STRUGGLE AGAINST APARTHEID:-
The O.A-U has always played an important
role in  the fight against apartheid in south Africa.
For instance at the Abuja summit member states resolved to continue to support the policy of sanctions against South Africa unity.
It was obvious that apartheid has been
eliminated.
5.    ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION:-
The treaty establishing the African Economic
Community (AEC) was signed at Abuja in 1991. The goal of the AEC is establish a framework for the mobilization of the human natural resources of Africa for sustained socio-economic development on the continent.
