OUTLINE FIVE MAJOR FEATURE OF NIGERIA'S FOREIGN POLICY SINCE INDEPENDENCE

Foreign
policy is the pattern of behaviour a nation adopts towards other
countries in the international system.

FIVE MAJOR FEATURES OF NIGERIA’S FOREIGN
POLICY SINCE INDEPENDENCE ARE:
  • Nigeria declared a
policy of npn alignment. Although this is more
on paper than in practice as during the early days of
independence, Nigeria leaned towards the west.
  •  Africa
is also the centre piece of Nigeria foreign policy. This
has prompted Nigeria to participate in settlement of boundary
problems peacefully with neighbours e.g. Nigeria and
    Camerouns dispute over Bakassi.
  •  Commitments
to total liberation of dependent colonies is another  feature
    of   Nigerian   foreign
    policy   since independence.
This had been dlearly demonstrated in the active
role Nigeria played in the independence of Zimbabwe,
    Angola and Namibia.
  •  Another  feature
    of   Nigeria   foreign
    policy   since independence
is commitment to peaceful settlements of International
    disputes.
  •  Nigeria
also believed in non interference in the domestic affairs
of other countries but she did interfere in Liberia.
