What is ecological succession?

Succession is a more a less orderly process of community change. It involves replacement, over time, of the dorminant species within a given area by other species.
It’s divided into two types: primary and secondary succession, in primary succession, communities are established in newly formed habitats e.g sand dunes, lava flows, bare rocks. In secondary succession communities are re-established in areas which were destroyed e.g in cleared/burnt fields.
