Minerals; what are mineral elements

Mineral elements are simple inorganic substances taken up by plant roots from the soil
– required in varying quantities
– based on relative amounts required. May be classified as macro/major and micro/minor
– also classified as essential or non-essential elements
– also classified as essential or non-essential elements
– also serve as buffers and catalysts in chemical reaction of the cells
– important in energy transfer system
– maintain ionic balance of membrane systems
– from parts of cellular structures/organelles
– phosphorus present in the form of phosphate in many plants
– in compounds such as ATP phospholipids, nucleosides, nuclei acids and metal-protein
– deficiency resulted in stunted growth
– reduced cell formation/meristematic activity
– restricted root development
– purpling of leaves and stems
– poor seed and fruit development
– loss of membrane integrity
