We shall now discuss all the above universities with information such as year of establishment, history, number of courses they offer, location, website address, motto and school fees.

University of Ibadan: 

Popularly called UI, It was created in 1948 by the British colonial administrators as part of the colleges of the University of London.

It was earlier called "University College Ibadan" and was awarding degrees of the University of London till it gained its autonomy.

It became a separate independent university in 1963, the year Nigeria became a republic.

It has a total of 92 departments in 17 faculties.

It is located in Ibadan, Oyo state.

As at the time of writing this post,  UI has over 41k students.

Its acceptance fee is thirty five thousand Naira (N35,000) and school fees ranges from N18,000 to N35,000 depending on level and department.

its motto is "Recte Sapere Fons" (To think straight is the fount of knowledge).

University of Nigeria, Nsukka: 

Popularly called UNN, it was created in 1960 by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe who was the governor-general of Nigeria at that time. 

It was later renamed to "University of Biafra" by Col. Ojukwu, it was renamed back to University of Nigeria after the Biafra war. 

It was the first indigenous and autonomous university in Nigeria and currently has about 102 departments in 15 faculties in 3 campuses. 

It has over 36,000 students at the time of writing this post making it one of the largest universities in Nigeria.

Its school fees is around N50,000.

The University is located in Nsukka, Enugu state.

Ahmadu Bello University: 

Popularly called ABU Zaria, it was created in 1962 as the "University of Northern Nigeria" before it was renamed after the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, the first premier of Northern Nigeria.

it has about 106 departments in 17 faculties and two campuses.  It also has 16 research institutes and 3 colleges of agriculture.

The University admitted 10,000 students in the 2018/19 session and now has a population of over 40,000 students 

ABU does not take acceptance fee but Its school fees ranges from N20,000 to N35,000 depending on department and level.

it is located in Zaria, Kaduna state.

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife: 

Popularly called OAU, it was established in 1962 by the government of western Nigeria under the leadership of Ladoke Akintola.  Its first campus was located in Ibadan before it was moved to Ile-Ife in 1967.
It was formerly called the University of Ife before it got renamed in 1987 after chief Obafemi Awolowo who was the first governor of western region.
It has about 60 departments in 13 faculties and 2 colleges.
OAU has a population of of 35,000 students.
OAU school fees is around N60,000 with faculty fee which starts from N12,000 and differs with faculty.
It is located in Ile-Ife, Osun state.

University of Lagos

Popularly called Unilag,  it was created in 1962 as per recommendations from the Ashley commission to create universitiesin different regions of the country and the then capital.

The university offers over 90 undergraduate courses which are scattered around its 12 faculties in the 3 of its campuses.

The University of Lagos has over 55,000 students as it admits about 9,000 per annum.

Unilag's school fees is around N50,000 to N55,000 depending on faculty.

University of Benin

Popularly called uniben,  it was founded in 1970 by the federal government of Nigeria under the Yakubu Gowon's administration.
The University offers about 131 courses scattered in 13 faculties in 2 campuses.
Uniben has an estimated student population of over 70,000.
Uniben school fees is around N50,000 and varies with faculty and level. 
It is located in Benin city,  Edo state.

Usman Danfodiyo University

Popularly called Udusok, it was established in 1975.
It was created as "University of Sokoto" before it got renamed after Usman Danfodio, the Fulani conquest and founder of the Sokoto Caliphate.
The school has an estimated student population of over 25,000.
Udusok school fees starts at N30,000 to somewhere around N50,000 depending on level and faculty.
Udusok has 3 campuses in which are distributed a total of 75 departments in 10 faculties.
It is located in Sokoto, Sokoto state.

University of Port-Harcourt

Popularly called Uniport, it was established in 1975.
Prior to its current name, it was called "University College, Port Harcout" in its early days.
Uniport has an estimate of about 40,000 students.
It has about 75 departments in 12 faculties 
It is located in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Its school fees and acceptance fee is about N50,000, plus an accommodation fee of around N100,000

It is popularly referred to as UNIMAID and was established in 1975.
It has about 48 departments in 12 faculties.
Unimaid has an estimate of over 25,000 students in terms of population.
It is located in Maiduguri, Borno State.

University of Ilorin

It is also called Unilorin, it was created in 1975 and has since then grown to be one of the best universities in Nigeria.
Prior to 1977, it was a University College under the University of Ibadan in its first two years.  
The school now has a student population of over 50,000.
UNILORIN school fees starts at N75,000 for new students and around 20,000 for returning students although you should expect variation with faculties.

University of Calabar

Fondly called Unical, it was established in 1975 by the then military government of Nigeria.
Prior to its establishment, it was a campus under the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
Unical has about 20 faculties and an estimated student population of over 20,000.

Bayero University, Kano

Popularly called BUK,  it was also established in 1975 along with udusok, Unimaid and some other universities.
Prior to its establishment as an autonomous degree awarding university, it was a preparatory college for A-level and GCE students and later became a faculty under Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
BUK has an estimate of over 20,000 students.
It has 15 faculties and over 50 departments.
The school fees in BUK is somewhere around N20,000 for returning students and over N30,000 for fresh students although the amount to be paid varies with faculty and level.

Federal University of Technology, Owerri: 

Fondly referred to as FUTO, it was established in 1980 under the Shagari's administration of the second Republic as part of its move to create a university of technologies in the various regions of the country.

It has an estimated student population of over 23,000 and 8 faculties of studies.

FUTO school fees is about N50,000 which varies with faculty and level.

It is located in Owerri west, Imo state.

Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola

Also called MAUTECH,  it was established in 1981 as part of the government's move to create a university of technology in the north, south, east and western regions of Nigeria. This was part of its industrialisation agenda.
Prior to its new name as "Modibbo Adama university of technology" in 1983, its initial name was "Yola University of Technology"
It has about 50 departments in 8 faculties with an estimated student population of over 15,000.
MAUTECH school fees ranges from N37,000 to about N55,000 depending on student's faculty or level 
It is located in Yola, Adamawa state.

Federal University  of Technology, Akure

Popularly called FUTA,  it was established in 1981 by the federal government of the then second republic as part of its industrialization move. 
It has an estimated student population of over 15,000.
It offers over 50 courses which are scattered around its 9 schools/faculties.
FUTA school fees is about N50,000 which varies with the course and level of student.  
It is located in Akure,  Ondo state.

Federal University of Technology, Minna

It was established 1982 and is also referred to as FUTMINNA.
The school has two campuses and its student population is estimated to be about 16,000.
It offers about 45 courses in a total of 
 10 faculties/schools.
Futminna's school fees is about N40,000 to N45,000 with variation by departments and levels but its acceptance fee of N20,000 is fixed without variation.
It is located in Minna, Niger state.

Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna: 

Also called NDA, it was established in 1985 as a degree awarding university.
Prior to this, the NDA has been in existence since 1964 as Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC).
It now offers both MSc and PhD programs.
NDA students don't pay school fees, the case is rather different as the students are paid monthly allowance from tamac/level 2. This is because, after the first level, they must have acquired basic military training and the rest of their study duration are more like the government sending soldiers for extra training. 
The NDA has an estimated student population of about 4,000.
It is located in Kaduna state where its two Afaka and Ribadu hostels are situated.

Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta

Also called FUNAAB,  it was established in 1988 by the federal government and has since grown into one of the biggest university of agriculture in Nigeria.
It has an estimated student population of about 17,000.
Funaab offers about 50 undergraduate courses scattered around its 10 faculties.
Its school fees is around N35,000 for freshers and N20,000 for returning students. please note that this varies with level and course e.g medicine and engineering students often pay higher fees compared to other courses.
It is located in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

University of Agriculture, Makurdi

Also called UAM, it was started by the  Ibrahim Babangida led federal military government  in 1988.
The student population of UAM is estimated to be over 13,000.
It has 30 departments in 10 faculties/colleges, it also offers postgraduate programmes. 
It is located in Markudi, Benue state.

University of Abuja, Gwagwalada

Popularly called Uniabuja,  it was established in 1988 under the Ibrahim Babangida's regime and has grown to the level it is today.
It has 12 faculties which are distributed between its two campuses although the school has a plan to move completely to its new main campus in Giri.
UniAbuja school fees is about N35,000 but as with the other schools, you should expect a variation in the amount and this usually depends on the level  or course of study.
It is located in Gwagwalada, Abuja, FCT.

Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi: 

Popularly called ATBU, it was established in 1988.
Before it got renamed to "Abubakar TarawaTafawa Balewa University" its initial name was "Federal University of Technology, Bauchi" which was one of those universities of technology created in 1980.
The school has over 11,000 students in about 40 departments which are distributed into its 6 schools/faculties.
ATBU school fees is about N45,000 for fresh students and N40,000 for returning students.
It is located in Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi state.

University of Uyo 

Popularly called UNIUYO, it was established in 1991.
Prior to its new name as "University of Uyo",  its initial name was University of Cross River State (UNICROSS)
The school has an estimated student population of about 29,000.
Uniuyo has 13 faculties which are distributed between its four campuses and its school fees is about N60,000 which varies with course and level of students.
It I located in Your,  Akwa-Ibom state.

Michael Okpara University of Agricultural Umudike

It is called MOUAU in short and was established in 1992 by the IBB military regime.
Before it got renamed to "Michael Okpara University of Agriculture" its early name was "Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike."
MOUAU has an estimated student population of over 15,000 and 57 departments distributed into its  12 faculties/schools.
The school fees is around N35,000 and varies with courses and levels.   
It is located in Umudike, Abia State.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka

Also referred to as Unizik,  it was established in 1992 by the Nigerian government.
It was initially  "Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH)" before its establishment as a federal university.
Unizik has an estimated student population of about 30,000.
It has 57 departments which are distributed into its 14 faculties scattered around its three Awka, Nnewi and Agulu campuses.
UNIZIK school fees ranges from N60,000 to N70,000 for fresh students and about N25,000 for returning students.

National Open University of Nigeria, Lagos

"NOUN" as it is fondly called was established in 2002 by the Obasanjo administration.
It has an estimated student population of about 75,000 making it one of the largest in the country.
It has 75 centres scattered around the country and its headquarters is located in Jab, Abuja. 
It offers about 750 courses and schooling activities are mostly carried out online. 
NOUN first semester school fees for undergraduates is N41,000 for new students and N23,000 for returning students, its second semester school fees is N13,000. 
Its postgraduate school fees is N40,000 for new postgraduate students, N23, 000 for returning  students in first semester and N13,000 in second semester.

Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun: 

Also called FUPRE, it was established in 2007 as part of the plan to create specialized universities in the country.
FUPRE has two colleges (College of science and college of technology) and 10 departments.
It has an estimated student population of 10,000.
FUPRE school fees is about N70,000 while its acceptance fee is N30,000
It is located in Ugbomoro, Delta state.

Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State: 

FUWUKARI was established in 2011 by the federal government of Nigeria.
It has an estimated student population of about 10,000.
Although a young university it currently  offers about 30 courses and has a 25 years growth plan. 
FUWUKARI school fees is about N30,000 for returning students and N50,000 for new students. The fee amount varies with course and level of student.
It is located in Wukari,  Taraba state.

Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State

It is also called FULAFIA and was established in 2011 in a move by the government to establish more universities in the country.
It has an estimated student population of 7,000 and has 20 departments in 4 faculties.
FULAFIA school fees is N45,000 while its acceptance fee is N10,000 but you should expect variation in the amount to be paid depending on course or level. 
It is located in Lafia, Nasarawa state.

Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State

It is also called FUOYE and is one of the Federal Universities that were established in 2011 by the Goodluck Jonathan's administration.
Though it is a new university but its growth rate is quite commendable as it now has about 55 departments in 8 faculties and an estimated 10,000 student population. 
Fuoye school fees is about N100,000 for fresh students and N50,000 for returning students, this amount varies with departments and levels.
It is located in Oye-Ekiti,  Ekiti state.

Federal University Ndifu-Alike (FUNAI) now called Alex Ekwueme university Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AEFUNAI) 

It was established in 2011 along with several other federal universities as part of a move to establish more federal universities in the country.
It has 9 faculties and an estimate of about 7,000 students.
FUNAI acceptance fee is N16,000 and its school fees is about N45,000 but hey, there are many other charges you have to pay which will take the amount up to N100,000.
It is located in Ndufu, Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State.

Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State

Also called fuk,  It was established 2011 by the Goodluck Jonathan led federal government as part of a move to establish in federal universities  in all the States of Nigeria which saw the creation of 9 universities.

It is located in Kashere,  Gombe state.

 Also called fudutsinma,  It was established 2011 by the Goodluck Jonathan led federal government as part of a move to establish in federal universities  in all the States of Nigeria.

Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa

 Also referred to as FUOTUOKE,  it was established in 2011 along with 8 other federal universities.
Fuotuoke has six faculties and an estimated population of about 7,000 students studying various courses.

Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State

Popularly called fulokoja,  it was established in 2011 along with FUD,  FUK and some other federal universities that were created in a bid to create more degree awarding federal institutions in Nigeria.
fulokoja has 6 faculties and an estimate of about 8,000 students studying  courses in their various fields of choice.
It is located in Lokoja,  the capital of Kogi state.

Federal University, Birnin Kebbi

Also referred to as FUBK, it was established in 2013 as an addition to the nine universities created in 2011 by the Goodluck Jonathan led federal government.

It is located in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

Federal University Gashua, Yobe

Also called FUGashua, it was established in   2013 along with fubk and FuGus.  This was a continuation to the creation of federal universities in every state that had non in line with the policy that saw the creation of 9  universities in 2011.
FUGashua offers about  25 courses in five faculties and has an estimated student population of 6,000.
It is located in Gashua,  Gombe State.

Federal University, Gusau Zamfara

Popularly called FUGUS,  it was established in   2013 along with fubk and FuGashua.  This was a continuation to the creation of federal universities in every state that had non inline with the policy that saw the creation of 9  universities in 2011.
It offers about 25 courses in its five faculties and has an estimated student population of over 5,000.
It is located in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara state.

Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil

Also referred to as Polac,  it was established as a degree awarding federal institution in 2013.
Prior to 2013, the police academy had been in existence since 1988 and had trained about 5,000 officers into the Nigeria police force. 
Its aim is to train and qualify senior officers of the police force in a well structured environment inline with the Pacy report of 1981.
Polac takes 12 students per year from each state of the federation and has an estimated student population of about 2,000.
It is located in Wudil, Kano state.

Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna

It was established as a degree awarding institution in 2018 when it got accredited by the National University Commission (NUC) to carry out undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Prior to this,  it had been established in 1977 as Technical and Supply School (TSS) and has had a couple of name changes till it became "Air Force Institute of Technology" in 2008.
Afit offers about 25 undergraduate courses in its 5 faculties.
It is located in Kaduna state.

Nigerian Army University Biu

Also referred to as NAUB,  It was established in 2018 following a motion passed by Senator Ndume on the need for Nigeria to have a dedicated university for its military.
It was approved and the NAUB got accredited by the NUC to run degree programs.

Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Delta State

It was established as a degree awarding institution in 2018 by the federal government of Nigeria.
NMU offers about 15 courses and has an estimated student population of 2,000.
