What part did chiefs play in the British colonial administration in Nigeria?

THE PART CHIEFS PLAYED IN THE BRITISH COLONIAL ADMINISTRATION IN
NIGERIA:

  • The chiefs helped in the
    preservation of the traditional system
    of administration which the British colonial master did not want to
    disorganise 
  • The chiefs helped the
    British colonial administrators in’ maintaining
    law and order 
  • The chiefs acted as a bridge that
    linked the British colonial masters to the people 
  • The British colonial
    administration got the people’s acceptance through the help of chiefs 
  • They organised forced labour
    for the British colonial adminstrator. 
  • Through the indirect rule
    system, the chiefs took part in running the colonial administration. 
  • The chiefs made use of age grades as
    law enforcement agents in administering their communities. 
  • They played a part in the
    law – making process as members of the House of Chiefs. 
  • They settled disputes in
    matters relating to native law and customs e.g. land, marriage, etc.
  • The chiefs helped in the collection of
    taxes and rates.
